Distal Femoral Osteotomy

Description

Varus distal femoral osteotomy (DFO), adjusting the mechanical alignment of the lower limb, is a recognised treatment option for lateral compartment osteoarthritis (OA) and valgus malalignment in relatively young and active patients. Similar to the re-appreciation of high tibial osteotomy (HTO), distal femur osteotomy (DFO) has gained renewed interest as our understanding and knowledge improves on the influence of malalignment on the development, progression and symptoms of OA. The less than optimal results of knee replacements (TKR) in younger patients has provoked renewed interest in joint-preserving treatment options such as the DFO. This video was the winner of the Alwin Jaeger best surgical training video at the ESSKA Congress 2014 Amsterdam. It describes our approach and technique for a medial closing wedge DFO.
