Do bone morphology associate with patella dislocation change with age?

Description

Purpose: To analyze the change of anatomical factors associated with patellofemoratl instabiliry over a 2-year period longitidunally.

Methods: 53 patients diagnosed with discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) who underwent surgery and were followed up for a minimum of 2 years were retrospectively included. Insall–Salvati ratio (ISR) and Caton–Deschamp index (CDI) were measured by X-ray radiography, and sulcus angle, trochlear depth (TD) were measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) preoperatively and 2 years postoperatively. Changes in each parameter over the two-year period were evaluated. Patients were categorized into two groups based on epiphysis status: open or closed.

Results: The patients’ mean age at the time of surgery was 14.8±8.0 years, with a mean follow-up period was 62.9±32.3 months. Over 2 years, ISR significantly decreased, while CDI decreased, with no significant difference. Sulcus angle significantly decreased, the mean TD significantly increased from preoperatively to 2 years postoperatively. In open group, ISR, sulcus angle, and TD showed significant changes over 2 years, whereas in closed group, no differences were observed in any parameter over the period. Changes in ISR and sulcus angle were negatively correlated with preoperative age, while changes in TD were positively correlated with preoperative age.

ConclusionsOver a 2-year period, ISR and sulcus angle decreased, and TD increased. Additionally, changes in ISR, sulcus angle, and TD were more pronounced in patients with open physis.
